Grade 7 Academic Enrichment Programme Once Scholars are admitted to the Programme, our aim is to ensure they are Grade 8-ready. To do so, SBF offers an Academic Enrichment Programme (AEP) focusing on literacy and numeracy in the months leading up to placement in Grade 8. At the start of the programme, the Scholars are given a baseline assessment to identify the areas in which they are strong and those where extra support is needed. Assessments are given at several points throughout the programme to track Scholars’ progress. Time management, study skills and life skills workshops are also offered as part of the AEP.

Grade 8 Orientation Camp For many learners, the transition from primary school to high school is a daunting one. For our Scholars, the transition is even more challenging as they will attend some of the best high schools in South Africa, where expectations are high and the social and economic dynamics are different to those of their primary schools. All SBF Scholars attend a Grade 8 Orientation Camp in January, just prior to starting high school. The aim is not just to build esprit de corps, but to help Scholars understand that they have the capacity to adapt to and excel in new situations. Much of the learning is experiential and thus both mentally and physically challenging, with a view to bolstering resilience and self-confidence. The Camp also provides an opportunity to begin exploring issues of diversity and life-skills.

Workshop series A series of workshops has been developed to provide grade/age-appropriate support to our Scholars. To help learners cope with the heavier and more challenging workload they will face, Grade 8 offerings include time-management and study skills workshops. In their first year, Scholars also attend speaker events where they have the opportunity to hear the stories of successful graduates of other Scholarship programmes. In Grade 9, course-planning work-shops are one focus and in Grades 10-12, the emphasis shifts towards university and career planning.
